A controller is plug-n-play. Some good software is FreeStyler, ShowXpress and LightJockey. My software of choice is freestyler and i use it with an Enttec DXM Pro USB adapter. Freestyler is free btw. I've been looking at the ShowXpress, but it's pricey!
